When our children were little, we allowed them to play all sports, but we also required them to be in the Chess club, of course we made them think it was their idea. While being in the Chess club at their elementary school they all three learned how to think. They are all now very good at Math, we have one son that is a Math major and another that is an architect major. Our daughter is in Pre-Ap Algebra and loves it. I think sometimes we need to require the kids to do a little extra learning like Chess so they can think in all the other areas.

I run a learning center where chess and math are actually intergrated into one math workbook and not only children get to work on math and chess combined questions, they also get some time to play chess in the class. The environment is not only educational but fun for children too.
The major difference from the normal chess progrram is chess and math are not taught separately but together as one math curriculum. This program also provides opportunities for those children who do not particularicly like to play chess but still would like to get the benefits of "playing chess". The pattern recognition, logic, symbol relation, decoding, relation between numners, image process are built in the math questions so children would still get the benefits of as if they had some chess exposure experience by workiing on these math and chess integrated workbooks although it can not totally replace the fun of having a good game of chess.
Yes, chess does improve the abilities of decision-making, pattern recongnition, logic, critical thinking skills, so the more we can provide children with innovative ways of teaching math and chess the better. More details about math and chess integrated program can be found at www.mathandchess.com.
