Chess Academy

I tutor second-graders in the Chess Academy program, and I have been consistently impressed with their ability to use high level strategic planning and problem solving in their chess matches. These skills are vital to students' successful growth in math, reading comprehension, and test-taking. Because the children view chess as a game and don't think of it as "work" or "school", Chess Academy allows them to further develop these skills with enthusiasm and a sense of play. Playing against each other also gives them the experience of healthy competition. My students enjoy trying to best one another in their games, but have explained to me multiple times that: "this is just for fun."
